Now in Scotland's lowest tier, Kilmarnock had finally reached rock bottom. Sweeping boardroom changes, led by Bobby Fleeting (manager Jim's brother) saw the club finally make a determined attempt to regain a respected position in the Scottish game. Two bold masterstrokes kick-started the revival. First, the decision to return to full-time football - a gamble for a club in Killie's league position - then the signing of Tommy Burns. Persuading a player of Burns' talent and standing in the game to spurn Premier or First Division sides when Celtic let him go was a clear sign that Killie intended to be back. In the three seasons here that process began. Killie got out of the bottom division at the first attempt (though not without a struggle) and established themselves as contenders for a return to the top flight.
