Killie 150 - Champions, Waddell, Europe & Glory Part One 1957-1960

In the book the years 1957-1965 are a single chapter but it strikes me it makes sense to recreate it here in three segments, this, the first, as a scene-setter. Three seasons in which new manager Willie Waddell builds on the legacy of Malky McDonald and surpasses it, taking Killie not just to another Scottish Cup Final but establishing them as genuine title contenders for the first time and leading them to another continent to hold their own against the cream of world football in a competition regarded as prestigious as European football at the time. Waddell also turned Kilmarnock players into full-timers for the first time in the club's history, the east terracing was covered and the go-ahead given for a new stand.

In these few years Kilmarnock demonstrated they were one of the most progressive clubs in Britain.

CORRECTIONS

In the text I refer to Killie signing BRIAN McIlroy. The spelling was actually BRIEN. This never came to light until long after his retirement from football. Unfortunately every time BRIEN has been used people have assumed it was a misspelling. So I'm sticking with BRIAN.
